Godzilla vs. Kong, also known as "Apex" is a 2021 American science fiction monster movie made by Legendary Pictures. It is the fourth film in the MonsterVerse, following Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which is a sequel to both King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island.
Although initially scheduled for May 29, 2020, Godzilla Vs. Kong had a rocky development and had to be postponed many times before finally being released on May 21, 2021. On March 26, 2021, the film was rescheduled for release before being shown to American cinemas on March 31, 2021. Additionally, the film was available on HBO Max until April 30, 2021.
Adam Wingard directed the film, which was written by Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields. Borenstein, Dougherty, and Shields collaborated on the script. Godzilla and Kong square fight five years after Ghidorah's rampage in Godzilla vs. Kong, which takes place five years after King of the Monsters.
When Jia comes to see Kong and offers him a toy, the Titan, realizing that he is stuck within the biodome, tosses a tree at it.
Following the attack, the general public was taken aback by Godzilla's abilities to defend humanity, and they turned against him. Madison Russell, an adult listener to Bernie's podcast, is terrified about the newest Godzilla attack on her school, which took place last week. Her efforts to argue with her widowed father Mark (who also serves as Monarch's director) concerning the origins of Godzilla's rampage are met with dismissive silence, with Mark just stating that creatures may change in the same way as people can. Madison enlists the assistance of her best friend, Josh Valentine, in order to unravel the secrets surrounding Apex and the guy responsible for Godzilla's rampage.
Meanwhile, Apex's founder and CEO Walter Simmons recruits Nathan Lind, a former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist, to help guide them to the Hollow Earth, an underground world below the Earth and the hidden home to the Titans, in search of a powerful energy source. At first, Nathan is initially hesitant since his brother tried to explore the Hollow Earth, but a strong anti-gravity field inside the tunnel ended up killing him. He finally agrees after Walter reveals that Apex has created and developed Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, specialized crafts that are capable of withstanding the gravity field's pressure.
Nathan flies to Skull Island to see his colleague, Monarch anthropological linguist and Jia's adoptive mother Ilene Andrews, and proposes that they use Kong as their navigator to direct them to the energy source since Skull Island can no longer hold him and let him to exist. Though Ilene first refuses, explaining that Godzilla would come for Kong as soon as he was transferred off of Skull Island, she eventually agrees when Nathan persuades her that they must go on this mission in order to end Godzilla's rampage and find Kong a new home.
To keep Kong from escaping from the boat, the Apex team is lead by Walter's daughter, Maia, and includes Nathan, Jia, and Ilene. Jia soothes Kong down one rainy night by enabling her and Kong to clasp fingers in solidarity while Kong signs the word "home" much to Ilene's astonishment. Next day, Ilene tells Nathan about raising Jia as her adopted daughter after a series of devastating storms killed everyone else in Iwi, including Jia's parents, but Jia was the only one to survive, thanks to Kong's care and protection, leading to the two of them developing an unusually close connection.
Because Godzilla has been startled by Kong's deep charges, their combat has been broken up.
Because of the cold, they can't bring Kong back to Skull Island, but Nathan wonders aloud whether he'll go down the tube if he knows there are others just like him. Ilene advises Jia to inquire with Kong about whether or not he has relatives in the area.
In that location, the three disembark and find themselves inside a vast dark chamber, where they come across Apex's ultimate weapon, "Mechagodzilla" a mechanized counterpart of Godzilla controlled by Dr. Ishiro Serizawa's son, Walter's chief technology officer Ren Serizawa, who is also Walter's chief technology officer. As soon as Mechagodzilla is launched, Walter releases a gigantic adult Skullcrawler designated "Number 10" into the chamber in order to put the mecha's might against the Titans to the ultimate test. Madison, Josh, and Bernie are on the brink of being attacked by the Skullcrawler when it is captured and detained by Mechagodzilla, who uses a tremendous red energy beam to slice the Skullcrawler in two, enabling Madison, Josh, and Bernie to take refuge in a tiny hatch. However, because to the restrictions of the power source, the test is cut short when the mecha shuts down immediately after the conclusion of the exam.
Walter then reveals his plan to capture the Hollow Earth's energy in order to overcome Mechagodzilla's limits. Madison then understands that Mechagodzilla is the reason Godzilla attacked in the first place: Apex is attempting to usurp him and all the Titans in order for humans to become Earth's apex species. While searching for an exit, Madison and the others come across a room where Ren is seated inside Ghidorah's severed head, which has been transformed into a biological supercomputer and cockpit for Ren to control Mechagodzilla via radio waves. Apex acquired the head from Alan Jonah after it was bitten off by Godzilla five years ago during his battle with Ghidorah.
Following that, Kong and Nathan's squad continue on their trek, finally arriving to a massive stone temple that previously belonged to Kong's forefathers. They discover remnants of an old struggle between Kong's and Godzilla's races as they explore the inside, and Kong discovers an ancient axe crafted from a dorsal plate of a dead member of Godzilla's race before sitting on a massive throne. Kong discovers that the same power source that Nathan's crew uses to enhance Mechagodzilla's power supply can also be used to replenish the axe. Despite Ilene's protests that Apex cannot just grab the discovery of the century, Maia and the Apex crew employ spider-like drones to collect the power source and return it to their Hong Kong headquarters. Maia orders her guards to fire upon Nathan's crew, only for Kong to scream loudly in their defense. In the meanwhile, Mechagodzilla sends a signal to Godzilla, who detects the machine's activation and goes directly for Hong Kong.
It's a good thing Godzilla can't fly. In their HEAV, Maia and her crew try to depart but Kong grabs it on their way out and smashes it in his palm, killing Maia and her staff within.
As Godzilla searches for Kong on a building, he recovers and stands up. To distract Godzilla, Kong ambushes him from above and places him in a chokehold, intending to strangle him. But Godzilla breaks free and unleashes his full fury on Kong, dislocating his left arm, slashing him with his claws and even stomping on his chest twice, despite Kong trying to force Godzilla off of him by punching his injured thigh. Godzilla roars violently at his beaten opponent, Kong, who is restrained and pinned down.
The Apex base is abuzz with excitement as Walter orders Ren to unleash Mechagodzilla against Godzilla. Though Ren advises him against utilizing the new Hollow Earth energy source without testing, Walter dismisses his pleas and coldly tells him to start the mecha. Bernie, Madison, and Josh are all brought to Walter by Apex security for entering the headquarters. Although Walter boldly claims he took full responsibility for allowing humans to fight back against Godzilla, Madison blames him of inciting Godzilla into war and triggering all this in the first place.
While Josh and Bernie try in vain to disable the ravaging robot remotely and Madison calls on Mark for assistance, Godzilla and Mechagodzilla fight, with Godzilla tiring from his earlier battle against Kong, but Mechagodzilla eventually gets the better of the fight, knocking Godzilla over and burning him. While Mechagodzilla proceeds to overpower and seriously beat Godzilla, Nathan, Ilene, and Jia approach an unconscious Kong, where Jia notices a slowing of his pulse. In order to restart Kong's heart, Ilene tells Nathan that they can't produce a charge large enough to do so, but Nathan, remembering what Maia said earlier about the HEAVs producing a charge big enough to power Las Vegas for seven days, detonates the craft and releases a huge electrical charge, which instantly revives Kong...
As Mechagodzilla prepares to fire its red energy beam down Godzilla's throat, Kong leaps onto the robot and redirects the beam into the air, saving Godzilla's life in the process. Realizing that Kong saved his life and sensing an ally in him upon seeing that he is not an enemy, Godzilla helps Kong fight against Mechagodzilla.
Madison re-introduces Mark to Josh and Bernie, who are delighted to see Mark and invite him into his program to discuss the Monarch facility in Roswell. Godzilla appears out of nowhere, prompting Kong to pick up his axe and continue the fight. Godzilla does not attack, instead staring Kong down. Kong lowers his axe, thereby ending the war between his and Godzilla's species. Godzilla and Kong are now on equal footing, and Godzilla returns to the water calmly, with Kong and everyone else observing.
Later, Monarch erected an observatory in the Hollow Earth. When Nathan and Jia happen to get a glimpse of Kong on his morning ramble, Ilene and Nathan are the first to notice him. Kong rushes onto a cliff, banging his chest and embracing Jia as his new home and realm in his screaming proclamation of himself as King of the Hollow Earth.

Indeed, although critics lauded the film's monster brawling, others voiced displeasure with the film's "half-baked" human aspect. The picture was credited with putting a stop to a box office slump fueled by the COVID-19 outbreak, earning an estimated $48.5 million dollars in the United States by Sunday morning of the five-day weekend release period.
